This Sunday marks the eighth time the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, also known as the Roval, will host a NASCAR Cup Series playoff race since its debut in 2018. The 2025 season sees the Roval continuing its role as the sixth playoff event, serving as the elimination race for the Round of 12.

Dominance and Diversity
Before the impressive arrival of Shane van Gisbergen, who has taken the NASCAR world by storm this season, five different drivers had claimed victory at the Roval during the playoffs. Notably, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson, both of Hendrick Motorsports, have each won at the Roval twice, with Elliott taking titles in 2019 and 2020, and Larson in 2021 and 2024.
A Unique Road Course
Drivers have been vocal about the distinct characteristics of the Roval throughout the weekend. Elliott provided insight into what makes this track stand out:
“It’s just about how much of a natural flow it has; that’s the only difference I see with it. This is just a place that doesn’t have a very good natural flow.”
Elliott compared the Roval to other road courses, such as Watkins Glen and Sonoma, which were purpose-built to create a specific rhythm for drivers. The Roval, however, presents a more challenging layout, lacking the seamless transitions found in traditional road courses.
Finding Rhythm

Elliott elaborated on the difficulties of establishing a rhythm on the Roval:
“The challenge lies in creating the flow from scratch… I’ve had weekends when I’ve managed to strike that balance and others when it’s slipped through my fingers.”
For Elliott and other drivers, mastering the Roval requires not just technical skill but also the ability to adapt and find their flow amidst the track’s choppy nature. This balance is crucial for achieving consistency and hitting marks throughout the race.
Looking Ahead

As the playoffs unfold, the Roval will continue to be a focal point of discussion and strategy among drivers. With its unique challenges and the pressure of playoff implications, mastering the Charlotte Roval could very well be the key to advancing in the NASCAR Cup Series championship hunt.
The upcoming race promises to be an exciting test of skill, adaptability, and determination for all competitors.
