Thursday Night Football: Baker Mayfield is as confident as ever | SB Nation

“I have to walkie-talkie him because he’s so damn tall,” Mayfield said. “So I can’t really have face-to-face conversation with him. You know, with Buffalo it’s cold, it’s rainy, even though he’s 6’10” his hands are small, so he better wear his gloves.”

During the Bill’s press conference, Josh Allen responded to Baker Mayfield with a friendly jab of his own.

“That’s crazy,” Allen said. “Baker wears two gloves golfing. So he’s that type of guy.”

The Bucs signed Baker Mayfield to a one-year deal back in 2023. However, after a 9-8 record and a playoff appearance, they decided to give him a three-year extension worth up to $100 million in March 2024.

This season, Mayfield has helped the team put up a 6-3 record after their 28-23 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 10. The quarterback has tallied 2,192 yards and 16 TDs passing in nine games.

On the other hand, Josh Allen and his team are 6-3 as well after their disappointing 30-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The 2024 NFL MVP has recorded 2,139 yards and 15 TDs passing, along with 311 yards and seven touchdowns rushing.

The Bucs acquired wide receiver Tez Johnson with the 235th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. So far, he has been decent on the field, recording 255 yards and four touchdowns receiving in eight games.

On Wednesday, Mayfield had nothing but praise when asked about the rookie’s growth.

“He just continues to do what we ask of him,” Mayfield said. “He’s doing the little things right and then where he’s coming alive. And his natural talent showing in scramble drill situations or he’s never stop until he find my eyes trying to get open all time so he’s doing a really good job down there.”

The Buccaneers currently sit atop the NFC South rankings with the Carolina Panthers in second place. Their game against the Bills is scheduled to be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield will face off for the first time in this key AFC matchup in Week 10.
